Conservation agriculture

The EMVL Chief Executive Officer conducted a field monitoring visit to a winter maize field managed by a Luwingu farmer trained by the company in conservation agriculture.

The visit reviewed farmer adoption and crop performance under the promoted practices. The maize shows promising crop development ahead of harvest, demonstrating the potential of practical training, climate-resilient crop management and continued field-level support.

Coffee beneath a retained
miombo canopy.

EMVL has initiated a 100-tree coffee pilot on its Northern Province farm. The Managing Director led the first planting as part of an innovative, locally tested approach to integrating coffee beneath retained indigenous miombo trees near the Lufubu Stream.

The establishment model is designed to diversify farm production while maintaining tree cover and supporting responsible management of the streamside landscape. Seedlings will receive supplementary irrigation during the approximately two-month dry-season establishment period before the onset of the rains.

Canopy management

Indigenous trees are retained as the structural canopy. Selective spacing and light crown pruning will be considered only where monitoring shows excessive shade or restricted airflow.

Riparian stewardship

Coffee is being established as an understory crop within a tree-retaining system intended to maintain vegetative cover and reduce pressure for clearing near the Lufubu Stream.

Root-zone management

Carefully positioned root-interception trenches, extending to a maximum depth of about 60 cm, will be tested to manage below-ground competition with dominant miombo species, including Brachystegia.

Adaptive monitoring

Seedling survival, soil moisture, shade, airflow and signs of nutrient or root competition will guide irrigation, canopy and root-zone interventions as the pilot develops.

This is an exploratory EMVL production model. Its performance will be evaluated before wider replication, with any selective tree management undertaken cautiously and outside sensitive stream-bank areas.
